Hip-Hop Showdown: Lil Wayne's 'Tha Carter V' & Kanye's 'Yandhi'

September 28, 2018

By Joanne Rosa

Lil Wayne celebrated his 36th birthday on September 27th, and ended the night by dropping his long awaited album “Tha Carter V” at midnight on September 28th.

The Young Money rapper made an announcement two days before his birthday in an Instagram post. “I heard there was a misunderstanding about the release date of ‘Tha CV,’ Weezy said in the clip. “I heard y’all got a little mixed up and y’all thought it was going to be released like last week or something. Well, I would like for you to know that since y’all stuck with me and hung in there anyway for like the past four, five years, through all of this—y’all got me feeling like Tiger Woods with this comeback—but on my birthday, I actually have something special: I will be releasing ‘Tha Carter V.'”

“Tha Carter V” was originally mentioned in 2012 following Lil Wayne’s 2011 album “Tha Carter IV” dropped. Two years later, it was scheduled to release on May 5, 2014, then cancelled. At the time, Lil Wayne’s manager Carter Bryant said, “I’m not going to release that date until I really, really, really know when it really, really, really is.” Six years is a long time, but it was worth the wait. “Tha Carter V” has 23 songs, and Twitter hasn’t shut up about how great it is.

Kanye West shared news on Saturday, September 22 that his new album, “Yandhi” will drop September 29 following his SNL performance. He revealed the album’s cover art. While Weezy celebrated his birthday, Kanye teased the album in a post on Instagram.

The fact that Wayne and Kanye are dropping albums in the same week means that both albums will compete for the #1 spot on the charts, and inevitably be compared by critics and fans. As expected, Kanye doesn’t see it this way. In a tweet on Thursday, Kanye said, “We’re releasing ‘Yandhi’ Saturday night. We know it will come in number 2 to my brother Lil Wayne and that’s lovely. The universe needs Ye and Wayne music at the same time.”
