MTV's 2018 VMAs: The Moments We Need to Discuss

MTV’s 2018 VMAs were cute, but can we talk about what went down last night? We’d be here all day if we discussed every time Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson looked at each other longingly, or how we’re pretty sure the V in VMAs stands for Versace. These streets are talking, so let’s get down to business.

Cardi B Opens VMAs With a Surprise

Cardi B speaks onstage during the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards.

Five weeks after giving birth, Cardi B opened the VMAs in her first public debut since giving birth to Kulture Kiari. When Cardi came out holding a bundle of pink blankets, we were hoping it was her infant daughter, but it was MTV’s “Moon Man” VMA trophy. She was really trying to make it seem like she was breast feeding her daughter on stage. It was so convincing, her boyfriend Offset took the joke seriously. Cardi revealed in a tweet, “Set said, ‘I was sooo mad, when I saw you on stage with that blanket. I thought you was going to show Kulture!'”.

Meanwhile, fans are feeding into the feud between Nicki Minaj and Cardi B. People are convinced Cardi threw shade at Nicki when Cardi called herself the “empress.” Later on, Cardi won the Best New Artist award and ended her acceptance speech saying, “All of the love that fans, my friends, everybody shows me is genuine and beautiful and that’s something that God gave me that you can’t buy, b***h!”.

Nicki has yet to officially respond, but she seemed unbothered when she responded to Halle Berry’s tweet of support. She shared the tweet saying, “If Queen Halle approves then [shrugging shoulders emoji].”

Madonna’s VMAs Tribute to Aretha Franklin Received Backlash

Madonna tributes Aretha Franklin onstage during the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards.

The public is still mourning the loss of the Queen of Soul (AKA the true Queen) Aretha Franklin. MTV did their due diligence to pay respect to her legacy by airing Dionne Warwick’s October 1970 performance of “I Say a Little Prayer,” and Aretha’s “Respect” during the show’s credits. MTV also chose Madonna, who is from Detroit, to make a tribute to Aretha, but she received less than lukewarm clapation from home viewers.

In fact, the majority believed the bizarre tribute to be “beyond disrespectful.” Madonna began her speech saying, “Aretha Louise Franklin changed the course of my life. I left Detroit when I was 18. Thirty-five dollars in my pocket. My dream was to make it as a professional dancer.” She went on for several minutes discussing her own career struggles, looped back to tell viewers her favorite Aretha Franklin songs, then continued to recount her times as a struggling musician. Madonna left us with these us her final words:

“So, you are probably all wondering why I am telling you this story. There is a connection. Because none of this would have happened, could have happened, without our lady of soul. She led me to where I am today. And I know she influenced so many people in this house tonight, in this room tonight. And I want to thank you, Aretha, for empowering all of us. R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Long live the queen.

“Another anecdote I would like to share: In 1984, this is where the first VMAs were, in this very building. I performed at this show. I sang “Like a Virgin” at the top of a cake. On the way down, I lost a shoe, and then I was rolling on the floor. I tried to make it look like it was part of the choreography, looking for the missing stiletto. And my dress flew up and my butt was exposed, and oh my God, quelle horreur. After the show, my manager said my career was over. LOL. So I would now like to present the nominees for the video of the year.”

Madonna released a statement on Instagram regarding the backlash of her tribute to Ms. Franklin.

“And just to clarify: I was asked to present video of the year by MTV! And then they asked me to share any anecdotes I had in my career connected to Aretha Franklin! I shared a part of my journey and thanked Aretha for inspiring me along the way. I did not intend to do a tribute to her! That would be impossible in 2 minutes with all the noise and tinsel of an award show. I could never do her justice in this context or environment. Unfortunately most people have short attention spans, and are so quick to judge. I love Aretha!”

J Lo Performs & Receives Vanguard Award

ennifer Lopez performs onstage during the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards.

The hair was flowing, the booty was popping, and that body was moving. Jennifer Lopez is still killing it at 49 years-old! Prior to receiving MTV’s Vanguard award, she performed a 10 minute medley of our favorite songs and her biggest hits, including “On the Floor,” “Love Don’t Cost a Thing,” and “Jenny from the Block.” She was serving face and hitting all of her marks. A-Rod’s smile didn’t quit all night.

Speaking of A-Rod, his face when J Lo thanked him in her Vanguard award speech melted our hearts to puddles. “Alex, you’re like my twin soul. We’re like mirror images of each other,” she began in her heartfelt tribute. “My life is sweeter and better with you in it because you make me realize that everyday the sky is not the limit. The universe is infinite, and so is what we can accomplish together with love, trust, and understanding. There is so much more to do, to experience, and there’s no one I’d rather do it with, baby. You’re my macho and I love you.” We love their love!
