Jermaine's Coachella Recap

Web Exclusives

April 19, 2018

Jermaine took Coachella last weekend and it was one of the best Coachella festivals he’s ever been to! A lot happened!

Here are his top 3 favorite shows of the weekend!

3. Cardi B

Cardi B spent more money than she actually earned at Coachella for her performance, but Jermaine said it was so worth it. “Where else could you be in the desert and see Chance the Rapper, Kehlani, YG, and G-Eazy?!” From Jermaine’s count, Cardi brought out a total of six people. His favorite moment from Cardi’s performance was when she played her last song, “Bodak Yellow”. The entire Coachella main stage screamed out “Bodak Yellow” from the top of their lungs.

2. Tank and the Bangas

Tank and the Bangas are a collective band out of NOLA, but Jermaine feels like they are so much more than a band. The lead singer, Tank, has wonderful energy. This was the first time Jermaine saw them live, and they did not disappoint. His favorite moment from this performance was when they covered “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana, which is one of Jermaine’s favorite songs.

1. Beyoncé

Jermaine is officially an active member of the BeyHive now. He drinks lemonade on the reg, and identifies Queen Bey as the best living performer. Jermaine wasn’t sure if he was down for throwing himself into the BeyHive, but everything changed when he bumped into some friends at Coachella. He met this group at the front row of the Tank and the Bangas concert on Saturday afternoon. They secured a front row seat for Beyoncé and extended an invitation for him to join.

Nile Rogers was playing on the same stage Bey would be performing at later the same evening so Jermaine figured he should check it out. Once he saw the view of the stage from the group’s spot, he was conflicted. He wanted to see other artists like Post Malone, but given the rare opportunity, he knew he couldn’t miss it.

Beyoncé had over 100 dancers, a full brass band, and she brought out Destiny’s Child, Solange, and JAY-Z. Here’s the thing, Jermaine has the inside scoop on the BeyHive’s reaction to JAY-Z. “The crowd was not here for JAY-Z. I don’t know what that means, but it’s not like JAY-Z came out and people started screaming.” Still, Jermaine felt like he got everything he needed from that performance. “She even sang the black national anthem… what other artists could be so blatantly and unapologetically black while being so excellent?! Only Beyoncé.”

There’s been a lot of talk comparing Michael Jackson to Beyoncé. MJ is Jermaine’s favorite artist, but his first note on this controversy is why does there need to be a comparison at all? One is still walking on this earth, and the other no longer is. “Let’s not get it twisted; Beyoncé Goselle Knowles is the greatest performer that we have walking around the planet. I don’t want to hear you talk about Madonna. I don’t want to hear you talk about Drake, or anybody else. It’s Beyoncé’s title to lose right now. Over the weekend she crowned herself Queen the same way Michael Jackson crowned himself King.” Jermaine still believes MJ is the G.O.A.T..

If you’re heading out to the desert this weekend, don’t miss these top three performances, drink plenty of lemonade to stay hydrated, and check out Jermaine’s Survival Guide.
