The new season of Dancing with the Stars premiered last night, but drama has been brewing backstage for a while now. Glee star and Beyonce’s back up dancer, Heather Morris, is a hot topic because of her background in dancing. Many of the contestants feel it’s unfair that she is even competing. Be that as it may, she may have some competition with fan favorites, like NFL player Rashad Jennings, and four-time gold medalist Simone Biles, who scored the highest score!

We learned a lot about the stars in the season opener.

Fifth Harmony singer Normani Kordei has performed in front of thousands, but this was different for her. During rehearsals, Normani was so nervous about her dance, she would literally pass out from nerves and being out of shape. She said she didn’t want to have that seen on TV, but host Erin Andrews half joked that they have her on camera, and will find her.

Immediately, actor Chris Kattan and dance pro, Whitney Carson were off to a rocky start, as she doesn’t watch TV. She had no idea who he was! Chris updated her on what got him on the show in the first place. In his mind, Chris was ready to get his groove on, but his body wasn’t. He told coach Whitney he broke his neck in the past, but assured her that it wouldn’t get in the way of his dancing. Check out his recap below to see is the judges agreed.

Professional dancers and engaged couple Peta Murgatroyd and Maksim Chmerkovskiy are back on stage together after Peta took a year off to have their baby. The last time Peta was on the show, she was the winner with partner Donald Driver. Peta is ready to get her abs back, and win the mirrored ball again. Of course, there is some competition between the couple, and it just so happens that Maksim’s partner, Heather Morris, is a professional dancer.

Speaking of Heather Morris, she spoke about what the show means to her. Heather grew up dancing, but has never done ballroom. She is worried that as a dancer, viewers at home that are also dancers will judge her harshly. She hasn’t been working or dancing in quite some time, and is eager to get the hang of dancing again.

Let’s get into a breakdown of the dances and the stars last night!

ABC's "Dancing With the Stars" - Season 24 - Portraits

Normani Kordei with Valentin Chmerkovskiy
“Good Time Good Life” By Erin Bowman
Quickstep
There’s a lot of pressure that comes with being the first dancer on the season premiere of DWTS, but Normani made it look easy. Normani looked gorgeous, and didn’t let her nerves get the best of her. Normani and Valentin need to work on their harmony as a dancing couple, but the judges believe they can get there.

Nancy Kerrigan with Artem Chigvintsev
“She’s Always A Woman” by Billy Joel
Viennese Waltz
Former Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan learned that dancing on the ice is much different from dancing on the floor. Overall, the dance was graceful, and the couple moved well together. Julianne noted Nancy’s arms look great, but her turns and spot need a little work. Len said the movement was expressive, and that the pair has great promise.

Chris Kattan with Whitney Carson
“What Is Love” by Haddaway
Cha Cha
They danced to the song that is basically the anthem to Chris’ career.
We learned that Chris broke his neck in the past, and that is causing a problem for him on the dance floor. Bruno liked his impression of the cha cha with a hangover after a long night out at The Roxbury. The judges want him to be true to who he is. In a non-competitive atmosphere, we would love every second of Chris’ dancing.

Bonner Bolton with Sharna Burgess
“Move” by Luke Bryan
Cha Cha
Bonner and Sharna have great chemistry. The two definitely turned on the sex appeal for this one. The judges believe he has the potential to be a great dancer, but needs to be more confident. There was a point where he lost his footing, but he got back into the groove quickly. Carrie Ann was “oozing” over Bonner. Sharna is in for the ride of a lifetime with Bonner at her side.

Charo with Keo Motsepe
“Cuban Pete” by Mambo Compañeros
Salsa
Charo still has the energy of a 25 year old! Charo is no stranger to performing and dancing. The 66 year old pop icon brought it all when she stepped onto the dance floor. Charo and Keo looked like they were having a great time. The judges were kind, with great comments practically all around. So when it came time to give their score, Charo was shocked, and disappointed with the results.

Nick Viall with Peta Murgatroyd
“Let Me Love You” by DJ Snake and Tiësto feat. Justin Bieber
Cha Cha
Nick wasn’t always smooth with the ladies, and the theme has now moved its way to the dance floor. More than one judge pointed out his flat feet. It was obvious that he was thinking about the moves too much, and needs to make things more natural. Luckily, Nick has the determination to win.

Heather Morris with Maksim Chmerkovskiy
“Make Something Beautiful” By Ben Rector
Viennese Waltz
Bruno hit it right on the nose: We got serious Beauty and the Beast (LINK TO PLAYLIST) from these two! Carrie Ann noted that we didn’t get to see Heather’s personality come through in the dance. Aside from that one comment, the judges had nothing but wonderful things to say about the dance. Julianne made it known to viewers that being a ballroom dancer is very different than what Heather was trained to do.

David Ross with Lindsay Arnold
“Go Cubs Go” By Steve Goodman
Quickstep
David wants to catch the mirror ball and win the game, and he just might do it!
David wowed judges, and caught them by surprise with his light and fast dance moves. It was not something we were expecting from a baseball player like David. There were some general pointers for David, but overall, the dance was playful, and well done.

Erika Jayne with Gleb Savchenko
“XXpen$ive” By Erika Jayne
Salsa
Leave it to Erika to dance to her own song. We could have seen that coming. If there is one thing the viewers at home learned about Erika, it is how flexible she is. Girl can do a split! Len didn’t think that the dance was tasteful, while Julianne praised her for embracing her sexuality. The song was Erika’s, so it only made sense that she did a dance to match it.

Rashad Jennings with Emma Slater
“24K Magic” By Bruno Mars
Cha Cha
Rashad and Emma are 24-karat magic on the dance floor. Julianne called this the best dance of the night so far, and thinks he can make it all the way. She wasn’t the only one who agreed that he was great. Rashad and Emma scored the second highest score of the night.

Mr. T with Kym Herjavec
Theme Song from The A-Team
Cha Cha
Mr. T is not on the A-Team when it comes to dancing. He told his dance partner, Kym that he is doing DWTS to inspire kids. So maybe he wants to show them that it’s ok to mess up on national television. Len noted that Mr. T does not stand for technique, but it must stand for tenacity and trying your hardest.

Simone Biles with Sasha Farber
“Untouchable” by Tritonal and Cash Cash
Tango
Simone Biles effortlessly took a split leap from the gym mat to the dance floor. Simone and Sasha moved swiftly together, and looked like they belonged together. Len claimed this was the dance of the night, and Julianne called them the dynamic duo. They have set the bar high for themselves, and the rest of the dancers.
