Eat This, Not That

Half the battle of losing weight is figuring out what to eat.

Glamour magazine is helping us get healthy and fit in 2010.

Find out what foods you should and shouldn’t be eating.

What to Avoid
Packaged Foods: The general rule is “if it grows, you can eat it.” So try not to eat anything that comes in a box, jar or wrapper this week. A few exceptions: low-fat dairy, high-fiber cereal and natural peanut butter or hummus.

Alcohol: Booze boosts appetite and has empty calories.

Caffeine: Having one cup of coffee in the morning is okay, but no more than that.

Sugar: Water can increase water retention. Check labels for words that end in “-ose”; they often mean sugar. (And be careful with artificial sweeteners—they can cause bloat if you overdo it.)

Soda: Regular or diet—sorry!

Added Salt: It bloats you. Flavor food with lemon juice, garlic, ginger, basil and other herbs instead.

Bread, Pasta and Crackers: Nix these carbs (even whole-grain) in favor of the starch options see foods to eat. (They’ll be back on the menu after the cleanse.)

Butter and Cheese: They’re high in saturated fat and calories.

Red Meat: Beef, lamb and fatty meats like bacon move slowly through your system, causing bloat, but you can have some of them again post cleanse.

What to Eat
Fruits: You can have any type, fresh or frozen. Berries, apples and pears are best because they tend to be lower in calories and sugars than, say, bananas.

Vegetables: Eat as much broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, spinach and other vegetables as you want.

Starches: You can have one serving— that’s half a potato or ½ to √ cup of
whole grains—at every meal. When it comes to spuds, choose sweet potatoes over white ones (they have more fiber and antioxidants). Whole grains
include brown rice, quinoa, oatmeal and bulgur wheat, among others. (See
the menu-planning sidebars on the following pages for specific meal suggestions.)

You can also have wholegrain cereal, as long as it has at least 9 grams of fiber per serving. Try Nature’s Path Organic Smart Bran and original Fiber One.

Lean Protein: Egg whites, chicken, fish, shrimp, tofu, lean pork, beans and tempeh are easy to digest and will keep you feeling full and satisfied. It’s important to have some protein at every meal — a portion should be 3 to 4-ounces (about the size of your palm).

Dairy: Have up to 10 ounces of low-fat or nonfat cow, soy or almond milk a day. (Never had almond milk? It has a slightly sweet taste.) You can also have six to eight-ounces of plain low or nonfat yogurt, preferably Greek. It has more protein than the regular kind, and it has no sugar or artificial sweeteners — unlike many fruit flavored options.

Healthy fats: No diet is complete without some fat (thank goodness!). So get a little good fat from avocado, olive oil and nuts. They’re high in calories, however, so keep portions to 2 tablespoons of nuts, 1 tablespoon of oil or nut butter or one quarter of an avocado.

  4. Hey Wendy Williams

    HOW U DOING? LOL

I HEARD ABOUT THE GLAMOUR DIET ON YOUR SHOW AND THOUGHT WOULD GIVE IT A TRY. IM A 36 YEAR OLD FEMALE, 5 FT 4 IN, 193LBS, LIVING IN OHIO, MOTHER OF 4, AND CURRENTLY COLLEGE STUDENT AT MIAMI UNIVERSITY OF OHIO. WEIGHT HAS BEEN A PROBLEM FOR ME OVER THE PAST FOUR YEARS. ITS TRUELY A STRUGGLE BECAUSE ITS CENTERED AROUND MY WAIST WHICH IS VERY UNCOMFORTABLE. I HOPE I CAN DO IT.

    BEST WISHES AND MUCH SUCCESS

  5. DEAR WENDY, HOW YOU DOING. LOSING WEIGHT HAS BEN A CHALLENGE FOR ME SINCE 1997. THE YEAR THAT MY 2ND CHILD WAS BORN. ALL THE KNOWLEDGE , ALL THE RECIPES, AND ALL THE DIET PROGRAMS IN THE WORLD CANT HELP ANY ONE WHOM IS NOT READY AND SERIOUSLY READY .MEANING MENTALLY, AND PHYSICALLY, SO MY POINT IS WILL THERE EVER BE SOME ADVICE ON STAYING FOCUS TO HANG IN WITH THE DIETS AND LAST LONG ENOUGH FOR THE DIETS TO ACTUALLY WORK?

  6. Hello Wendy a friend in my head what can I do for blotting and the fat under my arm pits

  7. i want to lose weigh

  10. How you do’n Wendy?

I think it’s a good thing to eat healthy, I just feel that some people take it to an exteme sometimes.

  11. I can’t find where this says it’s a 12 week diet, and where is the detox part of the diet? helpppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp

  12. i really enjoyed this segment of the show. i think it will be very helpful to me. I really enjoy the whole show. Thanks

  13. guess what? I’m about to try this starting tuesday. My goal is the 30 pds in 3 months. I want to fit some of my clothes again and pop tags from clothes that looked nice but I never wore. I actually gave away 28 suits (with tags) 3 weeks ago due to my frustration. My friends & mother “shop” in my closets!

My food challenges – i don’t like eggs, i will never eat yogurt, i will never drink cow milk (that’s for calves). Because the word milk is in my “head” it’s been difficult to consume soy or almond milk. I love potatoes & pasta & bread!!! I love restaurants! Bad portion control, skip breakfast most days, emotional eater, I like to make people happy by cooking meals!

Good food habits: I haven’t eaten pork since I was 22 (I’m 34 now), I rarely drink soda pop, i eat beef approx 2x week, i drink water, i don’t eat fried foods more than 2x a week, i don’t consume fast food often (but lately it’s been 3-4 times a week)

Physical problems: huge chest – hurts to do anything that makes them move – even though i wear 3 bras at a time.
I now have hypothyroidism (like Oprah) & the doc’s say that I won’t be able to lose weight, but I WILL prove them WRONG!

THE GIN ALWAYS WIN in twenty ten

  14. Wendy, How you doin? I loved this segment. I’m a vegetarian and try to eat healthy. Even vegetarians have to make sure our food is pure. Maybe you could have author Joanne Stepaniak on your show sometime. She is author of several veggie cookbooks including ‘ECOLOGICAL COOKING’. Namaste.
