Comedian Chris Rock wants to know: What’s “Good Hair?”

A few months ago, Chris Rock’s daughter came to him in tears and asked, “Daddy, how come I don’t have good hair?”

This struck a cord with the funnyman and he embarked on a journey to find out where the expression, “Good Hair” came from.

Chris visited beauty salons across America to uncover the truth behind the culture of African American hair and find out what members of the black community have to say about having “Good Hair.”

Watch the trailer now.

Tell Us: What do you think of the expression “Good Hair” and do you feel judged by society, or even your own family and friends because of your hair?

  1. FULL HAIR IS FULL BEAUTY!!!!! My goodness, when i was young (middle school) Me and my (european/american, and viet as in vietnamese) bestfriends used to buy the “Black HairStyle” megazines at our local grocery store and try to have the same styles, so many beautiful styles we drooled over in those megazines, we bought “jam” any special hair products, hoping to emulate those looks, but to no avail, it never turned out just right, but we ain’t stupid, neither are any white/latina/asian/native/indian/ect. girls who DID NOT CALL YOUR BLUFF when yousaid that your hair grew over night, we knew that it was fake, trust we knew, we are just too polite (and WAY TOOOOOOO JELOUSE of that versatilitly) to call you out………….My GOD THE GRASS IS ALWAYS GREENER, HUH!!!!! Because having the options that Black woman have (with hair style, and that beautiful thick-do anything, texture) is somehting that we have always envied (white/latina {latinas who arn’t mixed with black that is, spanish and native blood only) that is} & asian AND all that that that covers as far as hair goes have envied [or at least me and my asian friends{who have straighter hair than me, by the way] Dude, non-black women have always known what was up with weaves n’ all that, but all that ‘stuff’ won’t stick in our hair, or won’t be offered at where we get our hair done (up-until the last 5-10 years) But, who would not want hair like that? No WHITE/LATINA, MEZTISA/LATIN, WHITE/EUROPEAN/AMERICAN, or ASIAN GIRL (asian girl, as far as I know) would not want that beauty, we didn’t know how to get it until now!!!!! DIOS MIO, now that we know what s really up, you will be seeing weaves in our hair, so don’t worry beautiful Black women, your secret ain’t OUT, it was needed, WE LOVE YOUR BOMB ASS HAIR TRICKS WE NEED THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. After a horrible perm in September that completely burned my hair, I had to get a buzz cut and I went out and bought a wig. I now own FOUR!!! And I love it. I have had more compliments about my “hair” that I have ever had!! Everyone loves my “hair”!! No one can tell that they are Wigs!! But sometime, I laugh and tell the person who is admiring my hair that it is a Wig!! I guess I should just keep my mouth shut and accept the compliments!!

  4. I have never heard of the term until one day my aunt said it to me. I was as young as 5. It was my aunt, a cousin, and me. She said to my cousin that she had good hair and that she and I had “bad” hair. I didn’t understand that since my mother never told me that. My mother and my cousin’s hair were loose and soft but I never thought anything of it. I told my mother and she didn’t like that one bit. She said that was ridiculous. She told me kinky hair was actually better, you can do different things with it and it never caught lice. She was right about that. My child goes to private school and 3x lice has spread in the other children in his classes over the years. He never got that and his doctor confirmed what my mother said.

  5. Hello Wendy…I like your Style, upfront & honest. The best part…the audience has a voice on your show; how refreshing. A talk show that has TALK.

HAIR HAIR HAIR, I don’t know if Chris Rock is coming on your Show to talk about his Movie…What a Show that would be. If he does or not, you My Dear; can soooooooo do an entire show or half on the subject. When (not if) you do, Pleeease include “MY GOOD HAIR” type/group; the “Barber Shop Girls”. I feel that the assumption that Black Women want Looong Luxurious hair is a BLANKET statement. NO NO NO NO!!! Some of us are sexy, confident & so Sassy with blad, barely there, almost there, and just curly hair that is “GOOD HAIR” for us. Less hair becomes me and many woman.

What is Good Hair??? HAIR that is GOOD on me!!! DAMN, I have Good Hair:)

  6. HI YOU DOING! Windy

Congratulation on your new talk-show; my sister and I watch the show.

Will you every have a makeover (hair, makeup, clothes and shoes) spot on your show? I think I would be a great candidate, I need a new look.

  7. hi wendy i just got done reading the artical about cris rock and about the good hair think theres no such thing as good hair every body has nice hair

  8. Hi Wendy
How you doin? i love love love your show…i also love the wigs you wear and would like to know where can i order myself one…

    luv
    Feefee

  9. I think that good hair is not always straight. Even the thickest and kinkiest hair is beautiful. I think that even the sraightest hair is ugly. It depends on the person and how you wear your hair. You define your own hair it never makes you. How you dooin?

  10. Please take a moment to check out my documentary film BLACK HAIR

It is free at youtube. 6 parts including an update from London, England.

It explores the Korean Take-over of the Black Beauty Supply and Hair biz..

The current situation makes it hard to believe that Madame C.J. Walker once ran the whole thing.

    I am not a hater, I am a motivator.

Plus I am a White guy who stumbled upon this, and felt it was so wrong I had to make a film about it.

self-funded film, made from the heart.

    Can it be taken back?

  11. Hey Wendy i’m 14 and my dad is black, white, and native american and he had really beautiful curly hair. My mom is black but she has hair that is naturally a little bit softer. I had curly, beautiful hair when I was little and then because my mom couldn’t handle it she started giving me relaxers which ruined my hair and now it’s really dry. She always asks me, why don’t you have good hair like me or your dad or your brother (who has a different dad). I don’t know what to say because I feel like she ruined my hair. I think good hair is hair you can be proud of. I’m not proud of my hair anymore. In the younger grades it was long and pretty. Now it’s short and dry and frizzy. I feel like good hair isn’t like this.
Love your show Mrs. Wendy! Weekdays at 4:00 on Fox in North Carolina, it’s where i’m at!

  12. i don’t have a relaxer cause my mom won’t give me 1 so i get my hair pressed and some of my freinds have relaxers and there hair looks damaged so which 1 is better. i really want a relaxer but everyone”s saying no

  13. why do some black people call their relaxers a perm? I am black and always wondered. perms curl your hair, and relaxers straighten your hair.

its not as if many black women want to curl their hair, because its already curly and beyond that.

i guess its just semantics. but now I know relaxers are called “creamy crack!”I’m using that term now. I hate them too, and I have a mother who always tells me its time to relax my hair, and I eventually do it anyways because its hard to manage when it’s too puffy, nappy and out-of-control. I wish I could go natural – but I just don’t look like I want to when I do that.

Good hair is hair that is manageable. And relaxers help you with that. Just don’t overdue it, or you’ll lose some hair. But coarse hair is better than no hair.

We should all consider ourselves lucky if we still have hair!

  14. Hey Wendy,

I love this idea for the movie. Bout time! The clip where Chris was asking if men ever get to touch black womens’ hair was cracking me up! I have naturally curly hair, but it easily fades to wave or frizz if you run anything through it. I love my hair being touch, but heaven help me if someone dares run their fingers through it ! My man did this a few times in the beginning of our relationship and i was trying to be cool and act like i loved it; I didn’t want to break his confidence. I eventually lost it though and was like “DANG why you always tryin to mess my hair up!” I just love it when people act like it is a “black thang,” and my white ass feels the same way. I am loving how you bring people of all color and orientation and such together to realize we are so similar (I already knew this).

Hope you get nothing but love for the duration of your career

  15. All hair is good hair, just different textures. Wether you have coarse hair or soft hair all hair is good.

  16. My response, ALL HAIR IS GOOD HAIR. We have different textures of hair, some people of Black/African descendent will have different testures. I believe it comes from us being mixed with different races, some people still have the slavery mentallity that if you have some white in you and you come out with a softer texture of hair it is good. I feel those who have more Black/African genes will have a coarser texture of hair, but that does not make bad hair. It is just like some of us who are darker than others, some will feel if they are lighter they are better, not true, we come in different shades, with different hair textures. Chris Rock, please tell your baby girl all hair is good hair, the textures sometimes are just different.
    Sincerely,
    Auntie Renee

  17. HEY WENDY, ITS KANDI BARAKAT AGAIN FROM DETROIT!!! MY STEP FATHER SAYS THERES NO SUCH THING AS GOOD HAIR. THE ONLY BAD HAIR IS WHEN U CANT GROW ANY!!! JUST ASK ANY BALD GUY WITH A TERRIBLE COMB OVER!!!

  18. Wendy, I just got finished watching your show on BET and came to the conclusion that I along with some of the women from Quolor Shynes Hair Salon (Candi/owner) in Philadelphia, PA need to come on the show when Chris Rock is there because like myself we used to get perms and it would brake our hair off and messed up our scalps but now we have no perms, no weaves, no wigs – all natural. So for about 6 1/2 years without a perm – just hair dye, my hair is healthier then ever, thick and flows pass my shoulders and I can swing it like the beautiful woman I am. I think Good hair is healthy hair.
